And back to school we go! The emergency has passed!

Here’s your open line.

  1. Minnesota spent $3.3 million on 11 wind turbines. $3.3 million may be a rounding error by Washington standards, but it is real money to most of us, says John Stossel, a reporter with FOX Business and FOX New.

What’s notable is that none of the wind turbines work in cold weather. Minnesota has cold weather? Who knew?

    * The problem is that the hydraulic fluid, which lubricates the turbines, doesn’t work.
    * This fluid was designed for colder temperatures, but during the cold Minnesota winters, it doesn’t work, so neither do the windmills.

But this is government, where throwing good money after bad is second nature. Rather than give up, there’s now a plan to heat the hydraulic fluid, says Stossel.

    How will the heaters work?

    * They’ll have to use either electricity or natural gas at each turbine to keep the mechanism lubricated.
    * That will drastically reduce the net energy gain from each turbine, depending on how much heating the turbine fluid needs to stop congealing in the winter.
    * Since cold weather in Minnesota lasts anywhere from 4-6 months, that makes it very inefficient as an energy resource.

The irony here, says Stossel, is that taxpayer-subsidized green energy zealots would burn fuel to make a windmill turn.

  2. I heard that the tax office was letting the custodian take the money to the bank due to budget cut backs, the said person left the money on the counter and it disappeared.
    Can anyone confirm this rumor?????

  3. Twenty-seven deputies were laid off Tuesday as a cost-cutting measure. Beginning today, only one cruiser — staffed by two deputies — will patrol Ohio’s largest county. Cut loose were 16 road deputies, eight corrections officers, two dispatchers and one evidence person.

    Hope and change in OHIO

  5. Hey, galloping gourmet, Kevin is rubbing salt in the wounds our nation suffers because of greed and division.

  6. Did they give the custodian the lie detector test?

    Comment by Interesting — February 4, 2010 @ 7:36 am

  7. Custodian was taking the money to bank. Passed lie detector test. Deputies are now transporting money. Custodian had been doing it for years.

  8. Interesting, the news reported last week that the person responsible for taking the bag to the bank passed a polygraph. The news reported this morning that the rest of the employees were being administered a polygraph, if they passed others in the court house who would have had access would be questioned. Next in line would be bank employees. This, according to Peter White

  10. You think so Warden? Thats not what I am getting out of his threads

    Comment by galloping gourmet — February 4, 2010 @ 8:47 am

  11. I heard that also #2. If it’s true, they may never find the thief, because it was probably John Q. Public who had dropped by to pay a bill, therefore it could be most anyone. The main culprit here is the one(s) who made the decisions on this process for handling deposits.

    Comment by Everett — February 4, 2010 @ 9:03 am

  12. AND, somebody has to answer and step up to the plate and accept responsibility for this.

Custodians should NOT be given the responsibility of handling money, or being responsible for getting it to the bank.

The tax administrator, the county manager, and the sheriff all have to shoulder the responsibility for this terrible mistake.

NOW, who shoulders the responsibility for waiting 11 days to let this be known? That was just the wrong thing to do.

  13. Kevin, the constant copying and pasting of propaganda is going to grow tired after a while. even galloping gourmet seems annoyed by it this morning.

It is great that you wish to engage the people, but a large part of that means identifying those things that the people on this site wish to discuss, then speaking to those things.

  14. Warden, as someone who has struggled find a job I am not the kind of person who wants to see anyone hurting. This was from the county in Ohio where I was from and I have a uncle that works with the dept. there.
You do have a choice on election day and if over this year I can influence anyone to not vote for the root cause of the problem them that is my hope for change.
This has been a one party state for the majority of its inception and I would love to change that. In some states Republicans have been in charge and maybe they need the boot if they are doing the right things to move forward.
I am well aware that I can not change everyones mind and there are some that will hate me and the Republican party, but if I get one independent to vote my way on election day then I will feel like I have done the right thing.

    Comment by kevin osborne — February 4, 2010 @ 10:06 am

  15. FTWLOTR– I am not sure how news is propaganda, but if it is then I plead guilty. Most of the time I try to copy and paste the source as well so you will know where it comes from.

I would love for folks that are fans and voters of Obama to explain some of what is going on out there to me so I can understand how he is improving things. If you do not feel he is the I can understand how you feel as I disagreed with Bush on a number of issue while voting for him twice.

I have to go pay some taxes so everyone enjoy some great time without me to dumb you down!

    Comment by kevin osborne — February 4, 2010 @ 10:30 am

  16. kevin, i guess as a cable news fan (in your case Fox, but MSNBC I’ll admit is just as bad if not worse), you don’t know the line between news and propagandizing (it that’s not a real word, it should be).

in your comments 1 and 3, you include little snarky remarks at the end that are intended to take aim at those you disagree with. Your posts therefore lose the status of being “news”. If an objective newspaper piece had those statements in them, people would scream bias all day.

Comment by Follow the White Lines on the Road — February 4, 2010 @ 12:34 pm

  17. I am willing to bet a cold bottle of pop from Wally’s Service Station that this ‘money bag’ was never stolen. It has been misplaced. The tax office is loaded with camera’s that record 24/7. If someone stole it or picked it up, the camera would have got it. And besides, no county employee that works in that tax office is stupid enough to steal it, knowing that there are many policies and procedures in place for the money to be deposited.

Has anyone had the common sense to look behind a desk/wall partition/file cabinet for the bag?

    Comment by Sheriff A Taylor — February 4, 2010 @ 2:52 pm

  18. In # 3 I added the comment at the end because I want to know if this is the change Obama was talking about. Is it a little mean spirted ? Well maybe but I try not to stoop down to the level of the things I have seen on this site said about Hester, Bush, and even many Democrats that get slammed on here. Your point is well taken and in the future I will respond with the article and either not comment or comment in a second post.

As a side note I went and payed some taxes today and was treated well as I am normally. I payed by check like always and the clerk wanted to know why she knew my name. I told her I post on here and that got me a less than inspired look. At least she can put a name with a face, I am just hoping more folks will be MAN or WOMAN enough to own up to what they say on here.

    Comment by kevin osborne — February 4, 2010 @ 3:13 pm

  19. So, that means the clerk probably posts on here, also. He/she has read all of the negative words about the tax office, and true they are.

    Comment by Interesting — February 4, 2010 @ 3:15 pm

  20. The missing bank bag is not the only tax money missing in Vance County. The local fire departments do not receive all money collected when you pay your fire tax. So where is the rest going? Your guess is as good as mine, but i do know the law is the money must only be giving to fire departments. If anybody knows where the rest is please let me know.

  21. Many people read but don’t care to post and others read and tell everyone what they read. You don’t have to read it here to know what’s being said here.

  22. Vice President Joe Biden is such a nasty guy. View the swearing in today of Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown.

Biden stood on the podium at least one step up from tall John Kerry, Senator. Brown and another man. Then Biden proceeded to fumble and stumble several times while administering the oath of office.

    No class!

  23. Kevin, I enjoy your informative “propaganda” and have sense enough to look it up myself to follow up if I have a question, but I am dam (not a 4 letter word) sick and tired of you spouting off that people aren’t brave enough to reveal their identities. There would be repercussions for some of us if we did. If you knew me you would know well that I don’t mind telling you what I think, but on a site that bashes my bosses, I could hardly reveal myself. If you don’t like it find another blog. And all the rest of you who have “come out” just go blog on the Real HiH and leave us alone.

  30. Many years back, there seemed to be some money misplaced and a very prominent man caught the blame and was fired. When Mr. George Kane, I believe, was the contractor, he was remodeling the bank and discovered the bag stuck in the chute. The gentleman that was fired was offered many apologies, but he had started his own business by that time and didn’t want to hear it. Maybe someone should check the bank chute to see if this has happened again. I would hate to see our county make the same mistake twice. Does anyone remember that mans’ name? If not, I will do some research and find out and post it.

Comment by Talk to the Hand — February 5, 2010 @ 3:27 pm

  31. Which bank was that, and when was it? That would be something if that happened again.

Thanks for doing research. I’ll be waiting to read!

  32. #30
true story .One of the persons was the man that started Hartman’s steak house in Durham ,the oother was the manager of the A&P store in Durham. The bank was the old CCB down town Durham. The money was behind the night deposit chute. Both people got pretty well compensated along with their lawyers.

    Comment by Catfish — February 5, 2010 @ 7:55 pm

  33. Same thing happened to me 25 years ago at the Velvet Cloak in Raleigh. The second shift deposit was not in the safe in the morning and four people were suspects. As the night auditor, my job was on the line. After lie detector tests and voice stress tests I was thought to know who the thief was. Not true. The lobby of the hotel was being renovated and when they removed the front desk cabinetry, the missing deposit bag was found. Fortunately, management fired no one before the mystery was solved.

  34. REAL DEAL..at first glance, turbine problems in Minnesota seems far from effecting people in Henderson.
but think about it..wind farms are supposed to be “clean and green” energy..yet the environmentalists will allow fossil fuels to be used if it suits their purpose. But in other areas the greens have interfered with wind and solar farms, and always stop drilling or other forms of energy..
The Congress has initially passed the Cap and Trade bill, (AKA Cap and Tax) and it is winding it’s way thru..
The Cap and Trade initiatives will cause energy costs to rise for everyone..while some will make mega bucks off it…and for what?
“Green energy” is costly in delivery and development, and isn’t available for general wide use yet.
so..if your electric bill and transportation costs doubles or triples..maybe you’ll figure out how wind farms and turbines in Minnesota effect Henderson, NC.

During an interview, Obama said that his energy policies would cause energy costs to rise dramatically..
google it at youtube, unless you want to be “blissfully ignorant”..

    no surprise there.

  36. North Star…I don’t think Joe Biden fumbled around on purpose..he’s just so good at it, he can’t help doing it.

did you hear about when he was talking nostalgic about the Claymont/Wilmington area, and mentioned how he always goes to a particular restaurant there, and has been for years?
the restaurant has been closed for near 20 years.
    oops.
he just babbles on and makes it up as he goes along.
he’s famous for it. “Oh, that’s just Joe.”
he’s a dipstick and always has been.

    Comment by ziggy — February 7, 2010 @ 12:51 am

  37. Dipstick is a great term. Even a dipstick in the middle of a pond causes ripples. A wind turbine needing fossil fuels to run ripples all the way around the world.

Has anyone investigated the possibility of using kudzu to produce energy?

    Comment by Warden — February 7, 2010 @ 8:21 am

  38. there’s plenty of kudzu..
and we darn sure know it’s renewable!
    LOL
