Friday/weekend open line

Filed under: Opinion — Jason Feingold, Ed. @ 12:01 am

When my students bicker, it’s not exactly an intellectual debate:

“Yes you did!” one will shout.

“No I didn’t!” screams the other.

Frequently, there’s nothing to do but send them to the office for a cool-down. That’s probably as it should be. They are nine and ten years old.

When the adults do it, I fear for my (probably all-but-forfeit) future social security check. In this first decade of the 21st century, adults don’t challenge each other’s ideas anymore. They just shout, as evidenced by the health care rallies in Raleigh on Wednesday.

“Yes we can!” shouts one side.

“No you can’t!” shouts the other.

Let’s exchange ideas, not invective.

Here’s your open line.

  1. I have a idea lets take the government out of healthcare, and if you do not produce a valid SS card at emergency room door then you do not get service until everyone who has one has been helped. I will post some math to help you all understand why we do not need Obama running healthcare.

  2. A 15 mpg clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year uses 800 gallons of gas a year.
A 25 mpg vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year uses 480 gallons a year.
So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.
They claim 700,000 clunkers were turned-in, so that’s 224 million gallons saved per year.
That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.
5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption. More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars.
So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.
We spent $8.57 for every dollar we saved. I’m pretty sure they will do a much better job with our health care, though. Aren’t you?

Asked about the case, Biggs issued a statement by e-mail stating that Envirosafe is in discussions with Pergo’s attorneys, and the company anticipates the matter can be resolved without the need for further litigation.”

I feel very sad when I travel about in Henderson, & see all the properties available for sale. I would really like to see Henderson prosper, right now I see a dying town. Why can’t we get Target, Harris Teeter, or Kroger. in our town? I have called Harris Teeter and suggested it would be nice to have them in our community. Can one person make a difference?, I think so…So if, anyone feels the same as I do, Please call these company’s & let them know, we would embrace them in our wonderful town…

  17. Helen – it’s the lack of zoning. The biggest stumbling block to large corporations coming here is the lack of zoning. That’s why all the development stops in Franklin County. And when did Interesting start reading the local paper?

Our town WAS wonderful, Helen…certainly, it is not that any more, and it is so, so sad.

North Star, I agree with you. Seems like somebody did not do their homework in this situation, and once again, Henderson will be left holding the bag.

The handouts say for “first time college” students, but the college says that does not matter. The application ask for family income. but the college says that does not matter. Someone at the college said that the applications were gone thru and some were omitted before they were sent to lottery. Someone else at the college said that was not true. So I am looking for anyone true view on the program good or bad. Thanks.

  23. The early college high school is one of four high schools run by VCS. A student candidate has to be an 8th grader.Call VCS for an application for next year. The ideal candidate is one who may be the first member of the family to go to college. Also one whos family most likely could not afford for their child to go to college.
You’re child will go to VGCC and will be in class with other students his/her age take HS courses and as the yrs. progresses will start taking college classes. By the end of the fith yr., your child will come out with an associate degree and will be able to transfer to a four yr. college to get his/her degree.
It basically an accelerated program, (finish in 5 yrs instead of 6). Itis a demanding program but hasoutstanding teachers.
Mr. Mike Bullard is the principal there. He is welcoming and will answer any questions you may have and welcomes parents to tour the school, (2nd floor by the student union). Good luck. Y

They get double credit for HS and also toward college credit.

  29. Cricket (post #17) the lack of zoning is pro-business. America’s 4th largest city is without zoning. That city has grown, prospered and evolved because it lacks zoning.

Helen (post #16) Harris Teeter may consider locating here if the income base could support the store. The income base required to support a Harris Teeter is not achievable when the primary employment is government subsidies.

If I were one of the ones with a check missing, I would be at the Sheriff’s office, the tax office, the FBI every chance. Don’t people realize that identity fraud can happen with a bank account number.

Hopefully, somebody in that batch of checks is following through with this.

Just giving the tax office another check should in no way be the end of it.

  37. Bank deposit still missing

“The bank deposit bag missing from the tax office since Dec. 17 still is, Vance County Manager Jerry Ayscue said Friday.

Sheriff Peter White told him that polygraph tests were continuing to be administered in the investigation, and that there was nothing new to report, the county manager explained.

The bag — containing $7,800 in cash and checks totaling more than $52,000 — apparently never made it from the tax office to the bank, according to Ayscue.

At the Board of Commissioners meeting on Feb. 8, he assured affected check-payers that the county will absorb any related stop-payment fees required by banks.

Ayscue said any involved check-payer who makes such a request “needs to give us something from the bank that shows they paid it, or that they have been charged.”

He added that 53 of the 58 checks in the bag had been replaced and deposited in the bank used by the county.

On Feb. 9, Ayscue said no more money will be sought from property owners whose cash tax payments were in the bag.

He said the county’s insurance might cover the loss of the cash, depending on the outcome of the probe by the sheriff’s office and the State Bureau of Investigation.

There is a possibility that different insurance coverage could be involved in case of theft or loss, Ayscue said.”

This is in the Dispatch this morning. Funny thing the only thing they seemed concerned with is that they will have to pay bank fees. Something is strange.

  44. Thank you very much for information about possibly getting more business’s here in Henderson. I am getting worried about the possibility of residing in a town where there is limited shopping. I have been over to Oxford, the new Walmart is far nicer than the Walmart in Henderson, & the prices were lower. I can’t figure that one out! If this is a zoning factor, can’t the zoning laws be changed? After-all we have an adult book store, why can’t we have Harris Teeter, Kroger, or Target? If Henderson doesn’t do something soon, we will be in serious trouble…Ashley furniture & Sonic’s came in, & they left after one year..What we need is competition with Walmart. Target can give them a run for the money, so can, Kroger & Harris Teeter. This is just a thought on my behalf. I am tired of having no choice as to where I can spend my money, truly, I would like to keep it here in Henderson, but, I do go elsewhere to do my shopping. 47. Americans need to get over the ‘cheap goods’ mind set. There are many people in Henderson who would like to have a business but can’t get reasonable leases, loans, or city encouragement. I hate paying foreign workers wages so the corporation can get richer, so there are cheap products available for unemployed Americans. If we made our own products and sold them to each other, wouldn’t we be better off? I frankly miss my home town Merchantile way back when. This global economy has done nothing but take our jobs away. I’ve seen it coming for years and now it’s here. We need to be willing to pay a living wage to each other. I like to pay for goods that aren’t ‘cheap’ and disposable. Rampant consumerism is destructive.

  50. I wish you would stop and think on occasion before you post that we need a Target and a Harris Teeter. Sure we need them but we’re not going toget one. THINK about the towns they are in for a minute. There is a higher population in just North Raleigh and Wake Forest than in Vance County. This area is too rural and too poor for these businesses to even give us a second look when they know those who can afford to shop there will drive 25 miles anyway.

If she does not comply, her company can no longer do business in NC.

I wonder if the EDC, City Council, County Commission, or Chamber of Commerce know this. If they don’t, they should. If they do, they are hiding it and trying to pull a fast one over on Henderson and Vance County taxpayers.

Food Lion, and shop the Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Roses, Norlina Rd. for the rest of my needs. I feel so good not seeing the likes of Walmart and the unfriendly, unconcerned employees of it. The Norlina Rd. Food Lion has very friendly management, TJ Spain, Melissa West, etc. and all their cashiers are friendly and courteous. I recommend you trying this store on any day for a satisfied service. Savings go hand in hand here also, especially with their lower prices and the use of coupons! Stay out of Walmart for any reason! Oh, also, Helen, I moved all prescriptions to Rite Aid Pharmacy, convenient, courteous drive through window, no waiting, Health Savings prescription card if needed, coupons accepted..view online, etc. etc. Never had any problems with the service here…the store manager is very, very friendly and visible! Prescriptions can be picked up any day and mostly any time of the day. Go for it! Leave Walmart alone!

  65. Henderson boy fatally shot in Raleigh.

Raleigh police filed charges Sunday in connection with a shooting outside a nightclub that left one man dead.

Officers responded to the Kangaroo store in the 3100 block of Capital Boulevard shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday. They found Sedrick Williams, 23, of Henderson, inside a vehicle parked at the store. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

Officers later determined that the shooting occurred earlier in the morning at Pericos nightclub, 2414 Paula St.

Williams and Tobarus Oneal Alston, 33, of Henderson, had been asked by nightclub security guard Shontavius Levon Brown, 35, to leave the premises, Sughrue said.

Williams and Alston left the nightclub and got into a vehicle, which parked on the street in front of the business. Alston, who was in the driver’s seat, exited the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with Brown, Sughrue said.

Alston was charged Sunday with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill for his role in the gunfire exchange. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Alston was being held Sunday in the Wake County jail.

Brown’s actions related to the shooting continue to be investigated, and the findings of detectives will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office, Sughrue said.

It was not yet clear how Williams was shot, or what role he had in the gunfire exchange.

Patrons, employees and security guards did not call 911 about the gunfire at the Pericos nightclub, Sughrue added.

Anyone with information about the shooting who has not yet been interviewed by law enforcement is asked to call the Raleigh Police Department’s Detective Division at 919-996-3555.

  70. Rurh Jones: Mr. Haith is innocent. They could not produce the so called evidence. Seems the drugs probably went missing or didn’t exist. He did not sell or possess said drugs. He IS INNOCENT!
