  2. Congrats on that! That is awesome news! I knew we had talented youth in our community. Now, if they will just bring those talents back to our community in the form of teachers. Are there any incentive programs in place to lure back such brilliant minds to our community?

  3. I think it wonderful that three young men got into the School of Science and Math, but it concerns me that this article is about Governor’s School. My quick glance of the list of this year’s scholars shows that only two are from Vance County: Sharif S. Brooks in Math and Gregory D. Grissom in English. Congratulations to them both.

As recently as four years ago, Vance County routinely got four nominations in the academic fields (Math, English, Social Sciences, Natural Science and Foreign Languages), plus as many more as could qualifiy in the fine arts (Art, Band, Chorus, Drama).

Did the schools not nominate as many candidates this year? Or is Vance County getting the short end of the stick (again)?

  5. Give them a Henderson to be proud of and they will return. There really is no place like home once you venture out in the world. Some people never had a place to call home. I didn’t, until I came to NC forty years ago. I’ve lived in the big cities both east and west and purposely elected to find a small town to be my new home. I was once just a western farmer’s son. I’ve seen the world since then and have a deep conviction that the small towns of America are totally necessary and could be self supporting in a real sense.
