Election Watch 2009 – 07-17-09

Filed under: News — Jason Feingold, Ed. @ 12:49 pm

There were many new filings in Vance County yesterday and today.

On Thursday, incumbent Bernard Alston filed to retain his Ward 1 At-Large office. Lonnie Davis also filed to hold on to his Ward 4 seat.

The mayor’s race has gotten very diverse with Tammy Sue Lightfoot and Juanita Sommerville filing for mayor. That is now a five-way race, with incumbent Pete O’Geary facing four challengers.

Sara Coffey filed for Ward 1 At-Large in her perennial challenge to Bernard Alston. Cathy Ringley filed for the Ward 1 seat against incumbent Mary Emma Evans.

As previously announced on Home in Henderson, Lewis Edwards filed for the Ward 2 seat. He will oppose incumbent Mike Rainey for the office. Lowell West filed for the Ward 2 At-Large position, and he will oppose incumbent Mike Inscoe and former Henderson City Council member Bobby Gupton for membership on the council.

In Kittrell, newcomer Betsy Simpson will be running for town commissioner. Since only incumbent Gene Pulley has chosen to file for the 2009 election, and since there are only three town commission seats, each candidate is effectively unopposed.

Finally, Middleburg saw Mayor Ray Bullock file to hold his office. He is unchallenged. Gary Plummer will be running for a seat on Middleburg’s town council. Once again, no one in the Middleburg race faces opposition for the same reason as that of the Kittrell race.

Here’s how the race stands as of the end of the filing period today:

    1. Pete ought to withdraw for health reasons and to save face.

    2. By all means–we need to know if the candidate is the one who is a felon. Would the board of elections furnish the info on his application? ie, address, age, etc.?

      Comment by north star — July 17, 2009 @ 1:27 pm

    3. well one way we might be able to tell is by looking at the addresses. which address is in Ward 2? there is one living on Stanley and two (a father and son) live on Buckhorn. I do not know the wards. i am not going to post their full addresses on here.

    5. The application to run for office asks the question re: felony. A candidate would have to lie on his/her initial filing to run.

      Comment by doubt its true — July 17, 2009 @ 1:32 pm

    6. If you’ve been convicted of a felony….you temporarily lose your citizenship rights, including your right to vote. But you automatically get your rights back in N.C. after you serve all parts of your sentence, including probation and parole. You do not NEED a special document that says your rights ae restored. You just register and vote like any other citizen!….

I will add, they do have a right to vote whether people liike it or not.

      Comment by Maybe — July 17, 2009 @ 2:10 pm

    7. i don’t doubt you Maybe but that’s the first time I’ve ever heard that. The state does handle elections but it’s a federal mandate that convicted felons not be able to vote, if what you say is true then the feds should have reprimanded NC years ago. How can you know this and the feds do not? I seriously doubt no one would have brought this up, imagine the 2000 election for instance, if Gore had challenged on the grounds that NC was allowing felons to vote and their votes needed to be dismissed.

      Comment by heelshouse — July 17, 2009 @ 2:31 pm

    11. I hope that the challengers will form an alliance and work together as much as possible as a united team and will form strategies that will oust the incumbents. I realize that there is more than one challenger per seat going against an incumbent, but working against each other will only benefit the incumbents. Play smart and we will have the change we all so desire.

    16. Oh, Juanita Sommerville for mayor….. hmmm. Wonder who ol’ fat boy Sam will endorse and put on his little slips of paper this election? I’m betting he tosses O’Geary to the curb this time so he can keep the black vote in his favor and pretend he actually cares about their plight.

      Comment by Lars — July 17, 2009 @ 3:15 pm

    17. Sorry, Interesting– You do not determine what is a felony in NC and what is not.

    18. Be an activist for your candidates of choice. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising. Look at the issues and candidates stances; put aside high school and early life rivalries and be an informed voter who cares about the neighbors. There are home owners and small business people from other states living here and investing in our city. Fresh blood, with a more real world perspective, need to be given an opportunity to guide our city towards prosperity. Our ‘outsiders’ (like me) have chosen to live here and we care very much about our investment in Henderson.

    19. okay, i need one thing clarified before we go any further. I have heard conflicting reports on the “Sammieness” of Juanita Sommerville. Is she Sammie or No-Sammie?

      Why can’t she be independent?

      Comment by Behind Door #3, Bob! — July 17, 2009 @ 3:35 pm

    21. Please, Follow, don’t seek the truth of a person without personal investigation. Speculating who is a sammie or not is adolescent behavior; not at all befitting an adult who wants to make things better. EVERY person is both positive and negative. Some are victims of those elements, some elect to be positive. And woe to the ones who elect to be negative. They will get what they expect.

Comment by Follow the White Lines on the Road — July 17, 2009 @ 4:04 pm

    24. Copper, you certainly are quick to defend ones that maybe donot need defending. If you were not an outsider, then maybe you would know the whole ugly truth. People that have lived in Henderson have seen this city go down to the sewer with the sewer rats running it. If you are so protective about the city, the run for office like everyone else and try to make a difference. Action speaks much louder than words.

      Comment by truetoform — July 17, 2009 @ 4:07 pm

    25. truetoform, from what I remember I believe it was a cocaine related charge. Correct me if I’m wrong, but from what my memory serves, I think that was it.

      Comment by Will-B — July 17, 2009 @ 4:11 pm

    26. I believe that Mr. West was charged with trafficking drugs in the state of Fla. Also, another individual from Henderson was charged in this matter also. Sad thing, I heard his brother is a very well respected police officer in Oxford. Must have been a hard thing for his family to deal with. You know how cruel some people can be.

      Comment by pleasureseeker — July 17, 2009 @ 4:14 pm

    27. I can and do make a daily difference, thank you, truetoform. I don’t have to be elected to represent my ward, I do it everyday. I’ve heard plenty of the ‘dirty truth’ and still say, quit hashing over history. YOU need to take the lead, as a native born Hendersonian. Frankly, I’m glad I am a new comer and am not blinded by the past. Henderson will never be what it once was but we can remake it into a new, better place than it has become.

      Comment by Copper — July 17, 2009 @ 4:18 pm

    28. Also, it is my right to defend whomever I want.

      Comment by Copper — July 17, 2009 @ 4:23 pm

    30. Copper has a right to defend, support or speak for anyone she feels deserves her faith. I as well will do the same. There are many of us that have very good reasons why we don’t run but support others who do, that is as important and is our right.

      Comment by Vance Historian — July 17, 2009 @ 5:08 pm

    35. I am not from Henderson, but would sure like to see things move forward. We should not live in the past and expect the future to take care of itself. Kinda like the white folks now getting blamed for all the dumb-a white folks of the past that didn’t believe in freedom. If people would take the blinders off and look at reality, they would see that things aren’t half as bad as they seem.Keep up the good work Copper.

    37. I’m so glad that Mrs. Yount didn’t run again. Good for her!!!! Mud on all the little sick twisted faces of the New Direction! Every damn one of them. Now who will they have to push around! I know that meat head Glenn Craven feels even more stupid now after that rant in the paper against her. What a waste of daily print! That grinning James Edwards will find out soon! When they send them both packing! Henderson has asked and begged for what we have! What a sad pitiful “has been” town lead by the incompetent! Thanks to all who participated in the miscarriage of justice two years ago, WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Comment by Disgraceful — July 17, 2009 @ 5:51 pm

    38. Well, lets see….Sam and his New Direction gang will kick Watch Sam kick Pete to the curb for Sommerville. So she will be on his list to write a check to whenever she needs it. Now, we have Ward I:

Mary Emma Evans-pretends to support “her folk” but hasn’t done anything to assist them in their plight for better housing conditions, better working conditions or raises for city employees because that would go against her benefactors such as Cliff Rogers and others. She needs to step aside and let someone draw her paycheck because she certainly hasn’t earned it.

Bernard Alston–the ex lawyer, educator, tree surgeon and non-taxpaying council member who is always late to meetings and when he attends he is always on his Blackberry. He could be a good council member if he would use his intelligence for the good of the citizens instead of just occupying a seat on the board.

      Ward II

Mike Inscoe–the slum lord and business person who is certainly in the pocket of the New Direction Group and should be an independent thinker who wants to do the right thing for Henderson. He just can’t because he is doesn’t want to offend his New Direction friends.

Mike Rainey–nice guy in the wrong job. He needs to take care of the tire business and vacate his seat on the board because he can’t make independent decisions without checking in with the boys.

      Ward III

Brenda Peace–someone please tell her she is on the City Council. I don’t believe she knows it yet. Does she ever make decisions or bring up anything to discuss with the board? Nice person but shouldn’t be on the City
      Council.

Garry Daeke–nice person but cannot seem to stand up and be counted when necessary. He has made some good decisions in his years on the board but is kind of wishy-washy and a fence rider. No opposition so he is back for 2 more years.

Lonnie Davis-good coach but needs to quit eating all them biscuits at these meetings. He seems to get more on him than in his mouth. But, he will be back again since he has no opposition. Put some more money in budget to keep them biscuits coming.

George Daye–has he spoke a word since being on City Council? Nice guy but has been very disappointing. Thought he would bring a lot to the board but hasn’t done so.

Remember on voting day, throw those “Sammy Slips of Paper” away and vote to improve your community. If you can be bought for a “sammich” like I heard one voter say during the last election. His exact words were “you brought me up here (to polls) on that van to vote, now where is my sammich you promised.

We need a “Better Direction” than it has been the last two years. Tell the New Direction group to pack up and let some people who really care about this community take their seats.

      Comment by Enough is enough — July 17, 2009 @ 6:41 pm

    39. Disgraceful calm down, many of us didn’t vote for the “new direction” but really. that is the kind of stupid comments that keep people from working together even although they may start from opposite sides. It’s time to get over the past and work with even those you don’t agree with. I like Mrs. Yount but her attitude to those she didn’t agree with is what got her. Ranting and raving bitterness gets you no where.

      Comment by live it — July 17, 2009 @ 7:26 pm

    40. Disgraceful, I know you have to do something to make yourself feel like a winner, but just how exactly does Elissa not running leave mud on the faces of Sam’s people?? That’s just stupid. If what is said about Sam buying elections is true, and i don’t doubt that it is, that just means he has one less candidate he has give backing to. more money in sam’s pocket, sounds like he wins again

Comment by Follow the White Lines on the Road — July 17, 2009 @ 8:27 pm

    41. Hard to call it winning when what you get is someone like brenda peace making critical decisions for the city of henderson.

      Comment by boobyprize — July 17, 2009 @ 8:43 pm

    42. Brenda Peace does not make critical decisions. She barely knows when to vote only how to vote because her landlord Cliff Rogers and her buddy Mayor Young keep her buoyed up. Nothing has been done in Flint Hill. She should be ashamed but she likes the money. Ever heard of a write-in campaign, Sam?

    49. Is it true that the Brother D. Bernard Alston was removed from the Board of Trustees of VGCC because he didn’t attend the meetings ? Inquiring minds want to know. How about it Ira, Iris, or whatever name you are using this week ?

      Comment by Bill Ballance — July 18, 2009 @ 7:03 am

    50. Bill, wouldn’t that be on record at VGCC. Aren’t their minutes, etc. open to the public?

Alston should have been dismissed from the Council long ago. He is always late if he comes, and when he is there, he is on his Blackberry and doesn’t have a clue what is going on. It is evident by his body language that he would rather be any place else and could care less about being there. Henderson really suffers with him having a seat.

    51. #43 – great post.

People of Henderson – please throw away the slips of paper you get at the polls. NOBODY has the right to tell you who to vote for. YOU are an American, and you have a vote – vote for who YOU think will do the best job for Henderson.

Everybody knows we need a change. If there is not a change, Henderson is certainly doomed to fail.

YOU are your own person, and YOU have a right to make your own decision. Nobody will know after you get inside the polling places who you vote for – remember that, and you have the right to mark the ballots how you think is best.

    52. I believe you could be right #43. Ole Petey is standing on shaky ground and better watch his back. The New Direction may find it necessary to support Ms. Somerville in order to keep together their alliance with the black caucus, preachers, churches, etc. If so, Pete may need a neck brace to help him recover from being tossed aside so abruptly.

    63. IMO all of the “sammie” bashing didn’t work the last time. All of the assumptions, such as those spoken in #43 by Enough Is Enough, didn’t work. Stay above board. Call facts, facts. Leave out all of the assumptions and attacks, which gives HIH a bad rap. I for one want to see changes throughout the council, but citizens must learn from their past, not repeat the past. I believe it was Albert Einstein, whose definition of Insanity was doing the same things over and over, expecting different results.

My point is that there is enough ammunition to argue why candidates need to be replaced, without having to make assumptions – conflicts of interest, no results, no better housing in two years, after the CO was overturned by the sitting council. It’s up to voters to come out and vote and to know the FACTS. Let’s do our part to make Henderson a better and safer place to live. Learn the facts and share the fact. Peace.

what is a shame is that people will vote for reasons that have nothing to do with facts or what would be better for Henderson or Vance County as a whole, because they don’t know the facts and don’t care.
Proof of that is pretty evident.

All some do is take the people out of jail and put them back on the street to do wrong again.

    69. I’ll play. I predict Juanita will get the slightly lukewarm support of the Black Caucus and, with a moderate black turnout at the polls, will defeat Mr. O’Geary in a runoff election. Instead of MEE, Juanita will be our 1st black female mayor.

    72. Until I read ‘black caucus’ I thought Juanita might be Latina. You are so right that a ‘white caucus’ would be termed racial. Go figure…

    73. I think it’s disturbing that (if true) someone who was involved with a drug crime is running.

white lines..you make a good point about Daeke.
guess it’s a case of guilt by association.

    74. does anyone know Jaunita Sommerville?
what sort of person is she?
if she might be the next mayor..I hope she has good qualities.

      Comment by ziggy — July 19, 2009 @ 4:42 pm

    75. I would say that unless Juanita has some influential blacks against her or somehow a split is created among the black vote, she will win by a comfortable margin. Oddly, some don’t seem shy sharing their opinions on other topics, but we hear nothing about this from Hmmm, FTWLOTR, Black is Beautiful, etc. C’mon….how do you guys see this going down?

    76. ALERT!

      just got some disturbing news..
a Muslim organization in Chicago is having a big conference where speeches are being made downing capitalism and saying Islam is the cure.
      (videos shown on TV..Fox news)
I hear from another source that there will be a big demonstration tomorrow..
they are calling for the aggressive spread of Islam and Sharia law.

and for those of you who don’t like Fox news..
who cares where the story comes from as long as the report is true?
I do not know at this moment if it is being reported on other news sources.

      Comment by ziggy — July 19, 2009 @ 4:56 pm

    77. I LOVE FOX news!!!

    78. With whites being the minority on Council (5-3) and in the city (+60% black), why wouldn’t a “white caucus” be appropriate?

      Comment by good question — July 19, 2009 @ 5:48 pm

    79. it’s not racist by nature to have a “white caucus”, it’s just that only racist white people would see the need in joining such a thing. black americans have a culture that binds them in a way, so a caucus of those interests isn’t an absurd concept. there isn’t a common culture of white americans as the origins of why the various whites came to this country is more diverse than black americans, most of whom are united in being the descendants of african slaves.

    80. ONLY Fox News is balanced–the others are unbalanced–and I mean really “unbalanced”.

There will never be another Walter Cronkite–he was a newsman–not a paper cutout.

    85. The true unemployment picture further refutes the president’s faith in the stimulus. Mortimer Zuckerman, editor in chief of U.S. News and World Report, pointed out in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the number of jobs lost in the last six months is greater than any six-month period since World War II, including the military demobilization after the war. “The job losses are also now equal to the net job gains over the previous nine years, making this the only recession since the Great Depression to wipe out all job growth from the previous expansion.” The loss of jobs has been so rapid during this recession, Zuckerman adds, that it is likely to affect future economic behaviors.– I am glad so many of you have faith in our president because on paper he is not looking very smart.

      Comment by kevin — July 19, 2009 @ 10:24 pm

    86. Walter Cronkite would never have had anything to do with the clowns at Fox news–which admits, by the way, that it is baised.
Glad to see Republicans are starting to dislike unemployment. In the last administration they encouraged job loss as a measure of productivity.

    87. Juanita Summerville was a driver’s license examiner in Henderson who was a member of the Vance County Board of Education. She was transferred to Fayetteville (I Think) and recently returned to take care of her father. She appears to be an independent thinker who will make her own decisions.

      Comment by Political Observer — July 19, 2009 @ 10:59 pm

    88. Remember, independent decisions are often times determined by the dollar amount. Ask about five of the new direction board that Juanita is such good friends with. I’m pretty sure that the ones who control the decision making of our council also will control her. But, she really won’t really have any voting power and as long as she attempts to look pretty, she might make a good mayor. I think Purdy Pete has her beat in the hair department though.

    89. Infidel…since when does Fox “admit” that it’s bias?
the only show that would considered bias is Hannity.
all other programs attempt to give both sides a fair hearing.
even Hannity has Democrats and liberal pundits on to give their side of the issue.

since all of TV MSM, including CBS, NBC, MSNBC,CNN and a little less so, ABC, are all left leaning and bias.
It’s just that when their IS an attempt to offer both sides fairly..AND leading in the ratings..it’s called right wing..
      WRONG!
      C’mon…”The Ed Show”?
      Keith Olbermann?
      Chris Mathews?
Rachel Maddow (also from Air America)?

      need I go on?
I challenge you to compare if you can..
or do you not watch the news, and just believe whatever some say that suits you?
and just so you know..why shouldn’t both sides be heard?
it’s called freedom of speech..for conservatives, too, not just liberals.
sorry if you don’t like that concept.
now go rant at the huffington post or the Daily Koz..
don’t get me started on Ariana Huffington..

    90. and Infidel..if the story is true, and it is..what difference does it make who reports it?
      this particular group..
HIZB UT-TAHIR is downing capitalism and democracy as failures and evil, with Islam being the cure.
Kahlid Sheik Mohammad was a member of this group.
this group, espouses peace and tolerance, yet recruits thousands to Jihadism. Some of these recruits have joined with Al-Qaeda.
This group strongly supports an aggressive spread of Islam, and calls for Sharia Law to be accepted in the US.
I am merely giving information for anyone interested.

      Comment by ziggy — July 20, 2009 @ 12:51 am

    91. Walter Cronkite never voiced his personal views until Viet Nam..
no one was ever aware he was a liberal prior to that, and even then people of different ideologies disagreed about Nam.
It was really only in his later years he felt compelled to voice his personal views.
and I would bet that he wouldn’t have approved of MSNBC either. I would bet he would prefer Fox News if he were presenting news and not just ideology.

      try again.

    92. Fox News is extreme right radicals. All Muslims that are polical in there moques should be deported. they violate the seperation of church and state.

      Comment by rleonidash — July 20, 2009 @ 9:10 am

    93. separation of church and state isn’t constitutional, and besides which, many Muslims are not foreign born so I despise you talking about having them “deported.”

and it does make a difference who reports a story because of the spin that they will put on it, even if it is a true story. and Fox is biased just admit it and chill with the intellectual dishonesty; there’s nothing wrong with having a conservative or liberal bias, just something wrong with denying it.

Comment by Follow the White Lines on the Road — July 20, 2009 @ 9:30 am

    94. I’m not denying I’m conservative..but it’s possible I have a different definition of conservative then you do.
how am I being “intellectually dishonest”?
I don’t believe I am more so then some others here.
I repeat..I posted the story for anyone interested..I did not “spin” it.

and Fox news is NOT right wing radicals..that is absurd. admittedly Hannity is right wing, but not a radical.

name one person on Fox who is a right wing radical.

again…if the story is true..what’s the difference who’s reporting it, spin or no spin?
      the facts are the facts.

The second post about the story does not come from Fox news people, but a Muslim author who deplores terrorism and the Islamo-Fascists who are killing other Muslims and hurting Islam. He investigates and exposes these groups to the government and the public.

are you saying that other news sources don’t spin?
or is it just that since you agree with them, it’s ok for them to be PC, bias, and cover up the news that’s “not fit to report”?
It’s certain they didn’t report honestly on the Tea Parties, or much of anything else.

I don’t understand the attitude of disregarding the facts.
I prefer to have facts without the bias..
      journalism is dead.

    96. Our city council doesn’t separate church and state. Practicing preachers have no business running the city.

      Comment by Ironwood — July 20, 2009 @ 4:46 pm

    97. I heard that there is a clause in the Health Care Reform Bill that says it will phase out Medicare once the reform has started..which I think is 2013..
but I do not have the details yet.
      It is a concern.
also, that it will raise Medicaid by 50%..which many states cannot afford once the initial government subsidy is over..the governors..both R and D are concerned about an increased unfunded mandate they cannot pay for, especially with the high number of additional people on it.
seems to me that more needs to be known about this bill before it is passed, not after.

white lines..wonder if Berger plans to have any talks in Henderson?
      or did I miss it?

      Comment by ziggy — July 20, 2009 @ 11:31 pm

    98. I am sure if someone would take the time to read the separation of state and church item, they will find that the way it has been interpretted, by some people, that it does not mean that members of the clothe (Pastor’s, Ministers, Pope’s etc) can not serve in government.

    99. ziggy, in the past Berger has hit all four counties but the information I received yesterday only had information about Warren.
